What is the purpose of a Moka gasket?
Without the gasket, the Moka cannot function. It seals the two parts of the coffee pot, maintains proper pressure and directs the coffee upward.

It sometimes happens and it is always unpleasant. When brewing coffee, water can come out of the seam between the bottom chamber and the collector. Other times, the flavor is not what it always was and carries, rather, hints of burnt rubber. What's going on? In both cases, it could be the Moka gasket’s fault. Often ignored, the Moka gasket actually is a very important element in the mechanism of the coffee maker. And, like all other components, one needs to periodically check its condition. A connecting ring
A single piece formed by several elements. Ever since it was born, a Moka pot has had these characteristics. It is composed of:
- bottom chamber with safety valve;
- funnel filter;
- collector.
In the middle, acting as a connection, is the Moka gasket. This is a fundamental component that the coffee maker cannot do without. It is located under the collector. Its purpose is to seal the two halves of the coffee pot, but also to maintain the right pressure and direct the coffee upwards. A well-functioning gasket is, therefore, important and can be decisive when making a perfect coffee. For this reason, it should be subjected to regular cleaning and maintenance. Also because time and high temperatures make it vulnerable to wear and tear.
When to change the Moka gasket
The answer to those who wonder when to replace the Moka gasket is simple: when it is no longer able to perform its functions. We recommend replacing it at least once a year. However, the frequency of replacement depends on multiple factors. First of all, it depends on how you treat the coffee pot and the number of coffees made daily. Other important aspects are the operating temperature and regular maintenance. Not everyone knows this, but the state of the gasket also depends on how much you tighten the coffee maker. From this point of view, a good rule is tonot screw the bottom chamber and the collector together too tightly. This is to allow the gasket to operate in the best conditions.
How to make the Moka gasket last longer
The Moka was created to last. After all, coffee is not a one-and-done indulgence, but a ritual and a daily habit that is enhanced over time. The same applies to the various components of the coffee pot: from the valve to the filter plate and the gasket. As mentioned, the life of the Moka pot's gasket depends (also) on us. We have already said that the coffee pot should not be tightened too much. The advice is to screw the bottom chamber and the collector firmly, but just right. How to know when to stop? Simple: just a moment later than when the rubber begins to resist. Another risk factor for the health of the gasket is excessive heat. The higher the flame, the greater the likelihood that the Moka gasket will harden and dry out in a short time. The stove must be smaller than the coffee pot (or, at most, of equal diameter) and the flame at minimum. With these simple precautions, a gasket can last a long time. However, as already mentioned, it is advisable to replace it at least once a year in order for it to contribute to always making excellent coffee.
How to change the gasket of your coffee maker
Over time, it may happen that the gasket hardens and loses its elasticity. It is then time to replace it. How to change the Moka gasket?
- First of all, you need to get a gasket complete with filter plate, choosing original spare parts that comply with the model in use.
- At this point, it is necessary to completely disassemble the Moka pot, wash it well and dry it.
- Gently remove the old gasket, if necessary using a knife or screwdriver as a lever.
At this point, all that remains is to remove the old filter plate, replace it with the new one and also place the new gasket. As for when you use a new Moka for the first time, it is advisable to prepare at least one coffee to throw away. This will make the component lose its smell and give it the aroma of coffee.
